Hiking and Nature Trails

The Great Smoky Mountains has over 800 miles of trails, ranging from easy nature walks to challenging backcountry treks. One of the best trails for families is the Laurel Falls Trail. It’s a moderate 2.6-mile round trip that leads to a stunning 80-foot waterfall. The paved trail makes it accessible for strollers too.

Another family favorite is the Gatlinburg Trail. It’s one of the few trails in the park that allows dogs, so your furry family members can join in on the fun. The trail follows a river and offers beautiful views of the forest and wildflowers.

When hiking with kids, it’s a good idea to pack plenty of water and snacks. Nothing derails a hike faster than hungry and thirsty kids. Another thing you can do is turn the hike into a game, like “I Spy” or have a scavenger hunt for different animals and plants.

Speaking of wildlife, keep your eyes peeled for black bears, white-tailed deer, and 200 species of birds. Just remember to admire from a distance and never feed the animals.

Picnicking and Camping

After a good hike, there’s nothing better than a family picnic. The Chimney Tops Picnic Area is a fantastic spot, with tables nestled along a mountain stream.

If you’re really looking to be in nature, camping is a great option. The Elkmont Campground is a family favorite. It has all the amenities you need, like toilets and running water, but it still feels like you’re in the wilderness.

If water activities are more your speed, you’re in luck. The area around your Bear Camp Cabin rental is a fisherman’s paradise. With easy access to fishing spots, you can teach your kids how to cast a line and the patience of waiting for a bite.

For a more relaxed water experience, try tubing down the Little Pigeon River. It’s a great way to cool off on a hot summer day, and the kids absolutely love it.
